Victoria COVID LIVE updates: Melbourne lockdown to be extended as state records six new local cases; state’s regional area restrictions eased

Four of Wednesday’s six new cases related to a family who travelled to several locations on the NSW south coast as part of a camping trip in late May.

They returned to Melbourne on May 24, reported the onset of symptoms on May 25 and tested positive for COVID-19 on May 31.

Health authorities are still working out which family member contracted the virus first and where they caught it, saying initial interviews had failed to reveal any likely crossover points with existing cases.NSW health authorities put out an alert on Tuesday night in relation to several sites visited by the family and Victoria’s Health Department also added several locations linked to their trip to its list of exposure site, including three BP truck stops along the Hume Freeway at Glenrowan, Euroa and Wallan.

Rita Panahi: Clueless, clumsy and cruel now the standard in Victoria

It’s shameful and unjustifiable that Victorian bureaucrats can deny an exemption to crowd limits for a child’s funeral while granting them for film crews and construction sites.

Health Minister Martin Foley is not up to the job.

On Tuesday he again indulged in the most infantile politicking by repeatedly blaming South Australia for Victoria’s latest lockdown.

I don’t recall the Victorian government taking responsibility for the large cluster of infections in Sydney in July and August that were traced back to Melbourne, and I don’t recall NSW blaming Victoria for the outbreak. Nor did NSW lock down the whole state.

By far the most shameful episode under Foley’s watch has been his department rejecting a grieving mother’s request for an exemption to the 10-person limit for her eight-year-old son’s funeral. The decision to refuse an exemption for Cooper Onyett’s funeral was needlessly cruel and unjustifiable.

Australia has all but abandoned the COVIDSafe app in favour of QR codes (so make sure you check in)

The COVIDSafe app was pretty popular upon its release, with around 70% of surveyed Australians saying they supported the idea. And it was a good idea at the time. Now? Not so much.

Actual uptake was never high. By May last year, only 44% of those surveyed had actually downloaded it. Plenty on social media are now saying they’ve all but abandoned COVIDSafe in favour of the QR code check-ins done via, for example, the Victorian government app or the Service NSW app.

And when Victoria’s health minister Martin Foley was asked this week whether the COVIDSafe app had been used in responding to the latest outbreak, he said:

‘So glad’: Britain reports no new COVID-19 deaths for first time since March 2020

London: Britain recorded no new deaths within 28 days of a positive COVID-19 test on Tuesday.

The last time Britain recorded no deaths was in March 2020, before the country had entered its first lockdown. The figure on Tuesday relates to how many deaths have been reported and it comes after a national holiday on Monday - a factor which has in the past skewed the data.

“The whole country will be so glad there were no COVID-related deaths recorded yesterday,” health minister Matt Hancock said in a statement, adding that the vaccines were clearly working.

“But despite this undoubtedly good news we know we haven’t beaten this virus yet, and with cases continuing to rise please remember hands, face, space and let in fresh air when indoors, and of course, make sure when you can you get both jabs.”

Simon Birmingham admits Covid-19 vaccine rollout ‘hasn’t gone as hoped’

A senior federal minister has admitted the national vaccine rollout ‘hasn’t gone as hoped’ but reiterated another priority.

A senior federal minister has conceded on national television that the government has fallen short in its vaccine rollout, but says the problems could not have been foreseen.

The Morrison government had originally hoped to have four million Australian adults vaccinated by the end of April, but as of Tuesday, 3.7 million people have had one dose and just under 500,000 have been fully vaccinated.

Six aged care facilities, for which the government is responsible for vaccinating, have reportedly not received any doses of the Covid-19 vaccine.

Victoria to start five-day vaccination blitz for aged care workers

Aged care workers and employees in the disability sector will be given priority access to walk-in vaccination hubs from tomorrow.

The move is part of a five-day vaccination blitz aimed at protecting some of the state's most vulnerable people, Minister for Disability, Ageing and Carers Luke Donnellan said.

The priority access will last until Sunday and cover workers from aged care and residential disability settings at both Commonwealth and privately-run facilities who show evidence of their employment.

A guide on how to get your vaccine in Victoria

Being immunised against coronavirus is one of five reasons Victorians are allowed to leave their houses under the latest lockdown.

A rapidly moving COVID-19 cluster in Melbourne has prompted health authorities to widen the age restriction on who is allowed to get vaccinated to now include Victorians aged 40 to 49.

But speeding up the vaccine rollout in a matter of days has not been without its teething problems, as a record number of Victorians continue to be vaccinated against the virus each day.
