Victoria COVID restrictions to ease on Friday with 25km radius and masks outside gone in Melbourne

Melbourne’s travel radius will be scrapped and restrictions on gatherings, masks and hospitality will ease under Victoria’s next steps.

On Wednesday, Acting Premier James Merlino held a much-anticipated press conference and said the “state can come back together”.

Regional Victoria has been under more eased restrictions, but metropolitan Melbourne has still had a ban on gatherings, a 25 kilometre travel limit and mandatory masks everywhere since moving out of lockdown last week.

That will all change from 11.59pm on Thursday.

Melbourne’s new restrictions

From Friday, Victorians will have complete freedom of movement with the 25-kilometre travel radius disappearing.

It was put in place to stop Melburnians travelling to the regions over the long weekend, but will be gone in the coming days.

There will be changes to mask rules and residents will only be required to wear them outdoors when they cannot social distance.

Masks will still need to be worn indoors.

What is the Novavax COVID-19 vaccine? Will it be available in Australia soon? And does it use mRNA?

The Novavax COVID-19 vaccine has been found to have more than 90 per cent efficacy, paving the way for it to be available later this year in Australia.

The successful results from the phase 3 clinical trial of more than 30,000 volunteers in the United States and Mexico puts Novavax on track to have its two-dose vaccine approved in the US and elsewhere in the third quarter of 2021.

It backs up results of a UK study, released in January, that showed a similar efficacy in preventing infection from coronavirus.

What is Novavax?

Novavax is an American company based in the state of Maryland.

It was founded in 1987 and focuses on producing vaccines for COVID-19, as well as other serious diseases, such as Ebola and the flu.

The company's COVID-19 vaccine is officially called NVX-CoV2373.

“We have decided to expand the zone of primary close contacts from the 61 primary close contacts that we started with,” he said.

The new cases are adult males who live in separate apartments, adjacent to the four other positive cases identified at the complex.

Mr Weimar said it was believed the cases were connected to communal areas, which are “of concern” to authorities.

“We’ve progressively stepped up our public health measures to really deal with any residual infections that we may see in that area,” he said.

Across Victoria, Mr Weimar said more than 7000 primary close contacts had so far been cleared.

Are fainting and dizziness common side-effects of vaccination? What should you do?

While vaccination is a precautionary step to minimize the risks of COVID-19, experiencing side-effects with the jab can be fairly common. Expecting a fever, prickly pain at the injection site, body pain and tiredness are the most common ones which co-exist with vaccines we have under approval. However, there are some who also experience some unusual reactions, including fainting and blackout.

Coronavirus vaccination side effects that may resemble COVID symptoms

Most people experience inflammatory symptoms such as fever, headache and body pain, some unusual events, such as fainting, blackout, lightheadedness, dizziness have also been recorded in people who have been inoculated against COVID-19.

Is it normal to feel tired after getting the COVID-19 vaccine?

While these reports are still seen on the rarer side, fainting, dizziness and lightheadedness have been associated with almost all vaccines used globally.

Fainting and dizziness are rare, but concerning side-effects. However, experts are yet to find a direct link to any of the vaccines causing these symptoms. Instead, what researchers have established is that fainting (also medically referred to as 'syncope') may be triggered by pain or anxiety-related events post-vaccination.

It has been seen that most events of fainting post-vaccination are linked to anxiety related to vaccination. As strange as it may seem, anxiety-related reactions, sometimes also referred to as 'immunization anxiety' or stress response can sometimes cause the heart rate to drop and make a person faint.

How are blood clots associated with the AstraZeneca vaccine detected and treated?

Though extremely rare, blood clotting has been linked to the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Last week, a 52-year-old woman in New South Wales died of an extremely rare blood clot in her brain.

The blood clotting condition was likely linked to the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, according to the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).

It was Australia's second post-jab death out of 3.3 million doses of AstraZeneca (which makes up the bulk of the more than 5 million doses of COVID vaccines administered so far).

A total of 48 people have developed blood clots after receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine, with 31 recovering after being in hospital.

The first reports of people experiencing blood clots after receiving the AstraZeneca jab emerged in March this year.

One Nation Senator Pauline Hanson was taken to task after declaring more than 200 Australians had died as a result of receiving a Covid-19 vaccination.

The outspoken politician recently cited a report from the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) that noted there had been 210 deaths among the population who had received the vaccine, incorrectly claiming these deaths were a result of the vaccine.

Sky News political reporter Tom Connell emphatically rebuked the declaration from the senator, aiming to clarify the interpretation of the findings.

“What they go on to talk about is the fact there were 200 deaths following immunisation, but they do two things,” he said.

“First of all, every single one of those deaths are thoroughly examined to see if they are linked to the vaccination and the second thing they do is look at the natural death rate.

Chinese researchers find 24 new coronaviruses in bats amid renewed calls to probe COVID origins

The newly found viruses in the bats include one that may be the second-closest yet (genetically) to the COVID-19 virus, CNN reported.

Washington: Amid renewed calls to probe into the origins of COVID-19, Chinese researchers said they had found a batch of new coronaviruses in bats.

The newly found viruses in the bats include one that may be the second-closest yet (genetically) to the COVID-19 virus, CNN reported.

The researchers say that their discoveries in southwestern China show just how many coronaviruses are there in bats and how many have the potential to spread to people.

In a report published in the journal Cell, the Chinese researchers from Shandong University said, "In total, we assembled 24 novel coronavirus genomes from different bat species, including four SARS-CoV-2 like coronaviruses."
